The regions of Stockholm, Sörmland, Uppsala, Västmanland, Örebro and Östergötland are making a historic effort to improve regional rail services in the Mälardalen region. Mälartåg is an important part of this initiative, which the regionally owned company Mälardalstrafik is in charge of on behalf of the regions.

53 modern double-deckers have been purchased and are in service on Mälartåg´s five lines and a new train depot is in operation. This includes nine Regina regional trains, which are currently being refurbished to look brand new inside and out. Read more about our trains

Movingo period ticket is also an important part of the initiative, making it easy to commute freely by regional train and on local transport throughout Stockholm-Mälardalen.

Mälartåg and Movingo - The story so far

2016 New timetables with more departures on Mälartåg's lines were introduced

2017 The Movingo period ticket was launched and was quickly appreciated by commuters.

2018 The new depot for maintenance of the Mälartåg was completed.

2019 The first new double-deckers were launched in mid-December. Many new departures Örebro-Eskilstuna-Stockholm and Region Express were introduced on the route.

2020 More departures on Norrköping-Nyköping-Stockholm and Sala-Västerås-Eskilstuna-Katrineholm-Norrköping

2021-22 In the summer of 2021, 33 double-decker trains will run on all four lines. Another 12 new trains will be delivered and put into service gradually in preparation for the launch of many new services on 12 December. In conjunction with this, the trains will be operated by MTR and Mälartåg's coordinated customer service will open.

2022 The Upptåget service and trains became a part of Mälartåg, and is operated by MTR as of June 12 2022. A total of 62 trains run on five Mälartåg lines: 53 new Mälartåg trains and 9 other regional trains.
